Oregano is the most valuable aromatic, culinary and medicinal herb in all Greece . The Greek oregano is considered the best in the world. Apart from the characteristic aroma and flavor it leaves in the food, oregano has many medicinal properties, with the main active ingredient being carbacrol. In Greece, oregano is native and is found in mountainous and rocky areas.
It is anti-diarrheal, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal. Oregano is also a powerful antioxidant. The most likely medicinal uses of Greek oregano include the treatment of respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal tract disorders, periodic pain and urinary tract disorders. It reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Helps fight head lice. With topical application it can help in the treatment of certain skin diseases such as acne, dandruff, psoriasis, itching and tick diseases. It helps against unpleasant breathing. Helps regulate tympanic inflammation by stimulating biliary secretion
In the form of herbal remedies, it uses flu and colds to relieve intestines, cough suppressants, headaches, helps with hypertension and atherosclerosis. Oregano essential oil (oregano oil) is used for toothache. Oregano has 12 times more antioxidant activity than orange.
Gargle 2-3 times daily with oregano decoction, for mouth problems, ulcers and toothache
Another major use is against chronic rheumatism. The ancient Greeks knew its therapeutic value and used it by drinking its tea in colic and externally in swelling and for stroking.
For the preparation of the tea we can put in a pot of water and boil 1 tsp oregano for a few minutes, strain and drink.
It is used as a seasoning especially in the rustic salad. It is the main spice of the Mediterranean countries and an essential ingredient of Greek as well as Italian cuisine.
Its most popular use, of course, is as a spice in cooking, as it fits into Mediterranean dishes and many meats and fish. Oregano is a good preservative for creamy foods, such as mayonnaise and salad dressings. You can flavor with oregano olives, which in this way preserve longer, vinegar and black olives.
