The poppy seed is the seed that comes from the genus Papaver somniferum. It is rich in fat, has sedative properties and acts as an emollient, antitussive and antispasmodic.
The poppy seeds are used whole in cooking and baking, in particular, bread, cakes, biscuits and strudel. In cooking, the poppies are boiled and added to salads and pies.
In the kitchen it is used by many as decoration for bread, cookies and sprinkled on pasta to impart colour.
It can be combined with allspice, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, sesame and sumac.
