Οι μεγαλύτερες εκτάσεις φύονται ή καλλιεργούνται κατά σειρά στις χώρες, Κίνα, Λάος, Φιλιππίνες, και Τζαμάικα και βοτανολογικά δε σχετίζεται με τον κοινό γλυκάνισο (Pimpenella anisum). Κύρια χρήση του αστεροειδή γλυκάνισου όπως και του κοινού γλυκάνισου, λόγω της χημική ουσίας της ανιθόλης, είναι στην ποτοποιία. Χαρακτηριστικά παραδείγματα είναι το τσίπουρο και το ούζο.
